Dear friends and family,
I am thrilled to have the amazing opportunity to travel to Jiquilillo, Nicaragua to help build a home for a single mother in December 2018 with some like-minded friends.
Nicaragua is the 2nd poorest country in Central America and to add to the problem the rising tides have wiped out countless houses. Close to 80% of Nicaraguans live in inadequate homes. A Jiquillilo native, Yascara of the Woman Cooperative donated some land and asked Gerry and Monty from Monty’s Beach Lodge for help to build 10 houses for single mothers in need. Each house with a latrine costs $20.000 to build and this is the perfect place to help with your generous donation. All the money raised goes straight to the house, as volunteers we pay all our expenses (travel and accommodation) out of our own pockets. We will be in Nicaragua for 10 days and will help prepare the site, mix cement and clean up the area. We will also clean the beach, release turtle hatchlings and feed the children who live and work at El Limonal, the local dump.
Thank you for your help and support!
Women's Cooperative Home Building Projects
Nicaragua has one of the highest housing deficits in Central America with over 78% of the population living in inadequate homes or are homeless. Lack of adequate housing causes families to live with a constant burden of uncertainty, stress and fear. Safe and decent shelter provides an opportunity for families to break generational cycles of poverty and build better, healthier, and more stable lives.
Speroway is raising funds to support the relocation and safe and adequate housing for ten low-income families. Through your gift you will be helping to support these ten women and their children who are apart of the Women's Faith and Hope Cooperative in the community of Jiquilillo.
Nicaragua Jiquilillo Projects
Speroway works in the rural Nicaraguan communities of Jiquilillo, Los Zorros, Padre Ramos and the community of El Limonal near Chinandega. Activities and initiatives are pursued in collaboration with these communities, and in partnership with other participating organizations with a shared vision of alleviating poverty through improved education, accessible healthcare, and enhanced self-employment opportunities.
