Souls on Fire Tour: House Building-Carol & TaylorDonate Now
My name is Carol Dunnill and my granddaughter Taylor Hewitt and I we be participating in the Souls on Fire Tour in Nicaragua Nov 11-22 2018
I had the pleasure of going on this trip last year. We worked alongside the families in the community to build the 3rd house. Building the house was one of the most rewarding aspects of the trip. Being able to watch the walls go up, and see the sense of gratitude that the family shared with us, was heartwarming. The trip was fulfilling in ways that I had not expected. I found the people of Nicaragua to be compassionate, friendly, and gracious beyond belief. I also met a young man named Ramon who took me on turtle egg rescues. I was able to rescue over 500 eggs! I learned how to find the eggs, bed the nests, and the process of releasing the baby turtles. The whole trip wasn’t work though: we spent some time lounging at the pool, fishing, and playing in the waves. A few of us went fishing and caught Mackerel, Tuna, and Mahi Mahi. We gave the fish to the resort cooks. They cooked it for everyone for supper and even brought us plates of Ceviche to snack on during the day, fresh out of the ocean. I am bringing my 13-year-old granddaughter on this next trip. I can’t wait to share this experience with her!
Women's Cooperative Home Building Projects
Nicaragua has one of the highest housing deficits in Central America with over 78% of the population living in inadequate homes or are homeless. Lack of adequate housing causes families to live with a constant burden of uncertainty, stress and fear. Safe and decent shelter provides an opportunity for families to break generational cycles of poverty and build better, healthier, and more stable lives.
Speroway is raising funds to support the relocation and safe and adequate housing for ten low-income families. Through your gift you will be helping to support these ten women and their children who are apart of the Women's Faith and Hope Cooperative in the community of Jiquilillo.
Nicaragua Jiquilillo Projects
Speroway works in the rural Nicaraguan communities of Jiquilillo, Los Zorros, Padre Ramos and the community of El Limonal near Chinandega. Activities and initiatives are pursued in collaboration with these communities, and in partnership with other participating organizations with a shared vision of alleviating poverty through improved education, accessible healthcare, and enhanced self-employment opportunities.
