Twenty Women Strong- Tabatha Dunnill

$1,000.00 of $1,000.00 raised

This November, I will be trading in my scrubs to build a house for a deserving family in Jiquilillo, Nicaragua. I learned about this project recently when some friends told me they were going to volunteer in Nicaragua to help build a home for a single mother and her children. I will be travelling with these 19 ladies who also feel passionate about lending a hand to those who need it.

I have been a Care Aide for seven years, and am nearly finished school for Psychiatric Nursing. This trip will be happening right after my graduation. I think that I have had a very fortunate life and believe in sharing my time and myself in order to help others who have had fewer opportunities or have been less fortunate. My mom was a single mom for part of my childhood and I remember how hard she worked to make sure my siblings and I had our needs met. When she met my stepdad, our life improved as we were provided with many more opportunities.  Some of these opportunities that we have today are foreign to people in Central America, especially Nicaragua, which has been devastated by several hurricanes recently. This young family doesn’t have (what we would consider) basic necessities and although Nicaragua is a beautiful country, it is a harder way of life. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful place with amenities that this family has only dreamed about. Unfortunately, living on the street could become their reality and only option because there are no support services or resources that can be accessed in their country, such as the ones we have.
Please join me in helping to change the lives of this mother and her young family, who are struggling to survive in very poor conditions. These children deserve to have a roof over their head and an opportunity to live in a community that will support each other. We will be able to build a house, a shared latrine for the community, and provide a lunch (one day) for a neighbouring community.  This volunteer work vacation will not only affect the lives of this family but also mine, as I am honoured to be able to give back and help those less fortunate.
My goal is to raise $1000.00. Every dollar donated helps get me closer to my goal, and is entirely put towards this project; all donations are eligible for a tax receipt and come with this family’s and my appreciation.
Thank you for your support,
Tabatha Dunnill

Women's Cooperative Home Building Projects

Nicaragua has one of the highest housing deficits in Central America with over 78% of the population living in inadequate homes or are homeless. Lack of adequate housing causes families to live with a constant burden of uncertainty, stress and fear. Safe and decent shelter provides an opportunity for families to break generational cycles of poverty and build better, healthier, and more stable lives.

Speroway is raising funds to support the relocation and safe and adequate housing for ten low-income families. Through your gift you will be helping to support these ten women and their children who are apart of the Women's Faith and Hope Cooperative in the community of Jiquilillo.

Home Building in Nicaragua

Nicaragua Jiquilillo Projects

Speroway works in the rural Nicaraguan communities of Jiquilillo, Los Zorros, Padre Ramos and the community of El Limonal near Chinandega. Activities and initiatives are pursued in collaboration with these communities, and in partnership with other participating organizations with a shared vision of alleviating poverty through improved education, accessible healthcare, and enhanced self-employment opportunities.
