Haiti in Crisis. 1 in 3 People Need Urgent Food Aid.
Haiti has been in the news a lot over the past ten years, mainly due to the devastating earthquake that hit the country January 2010. Nearly two hundred thousand people lost their lives and millions of others were dramatically impacted.
Over the past ten years, the country had made many positive strides forward, communities and infrastructure were rebuilt, education became a priority and agriculture was stabilizing. Now socio-economic unrest, a drop in agricultural production and food prices doubling has led to a drastic increase in food insecurity.
Haiti is facing a new crisis. People are struggling to feed their families.
More than 3,700,000 people do not have enough food to feed their families. That is about 1 in 3 people in Haiti and among them 1,000,000 people are experiencing severe hunger.
Speroway is working in two key areas in Haiti. In Canaan, a new settlement set up after the 2010 earthquake, we support community feeding and school feeding programs. This area has become home to 100,000 people. Most of them still live in makeshift houses, lack water and basic services but now finding regular meals is becoming a luxury.
The twin girls in the pictures, attend one of the schools we work in. One of the biggest reasons for kids wanting to attend school is to get a meal. You see the anticipation in their eyes as they wait for their lunch.
On this day we were able to provide food for them, but your donation is needed for us to continue these programs.
Your gift of $35, $65, $100 or whatever amount you can provide, along with the support of corporate partners, will enable us to multiply your gift by 10 times.
Food insecurity is not new to Haiti and we have asked for your support toward food programs a number of times over the past few years. You have helped thousands of children and families. What is different this time is the cost of food has gone up so much most people cannot afford to buy food even when it’s available.
Our partners tell us that school and community feeding programs are now more important than ever. People are going days without food and many people are only surviving by support from their neighbours
The other key area that Speroway works is in the middle of the country near Pignon. Pierre and Phara, have come to a community feeding program, they are getting some of the last pieces of chicken available today. They are so thankful that they were able to get this meal, many in the community don’t know if there will be anything to eat tomorrow
Where possible we are helping to purchase food locally, but supplies are low. With your support we will also procure, deliver and distribute containers of food aid, the cost to do this is between $6000 and $9000 depending on where it is going in the country. Maybe you and your family or friends can help with a whole container or part of one.
For me few countries tug on the heartstrings like Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. A country facing skyrocketing food prices and malnutrition. The children in Haiti really need our help. Please consider making a generous gift today.
