Help Mothers give their Children a Future:  No one should face crisis alone…

Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, or someone raised by one, you know the strength it takes to care for a child. I’ve seen that same strength in the mothers we serve – women facing overwhelming challenges every day. Here in Canada, many of us know the stress of making ends meet. But for moms in crisis, the struggle is even greater. That’s why I’m inviting you to stand with them. Your gift through Speroway can provide the food, medical care, and hope they urgently need.

 Anna’s Story

During a recent visit to Jiquilillo, Nicaragua, I met Anna, a determined young mother working tirelessly to give her four-year-old son, Johnny, a better life. Anna believes deeply in education and knows school is key to his future. Johnny just started kindergarten, and she has big dreams for him.

But life is far from easy. They live in a makeshift shelter made of scrap metal and tarps, full of holes that let in rain and wind. The damp, unstable conditions have taken a toll on Johnny’s health – he’s been battling infections and pneumonia.

Anna does all she can to care for her son. Her mother helps watch Johnny while Anna takes on day labor, cleaning houses when she can. Still, it’s not enough. The day I visited, Johnny went to school hungry – because there simply wasn’t any food. Like many mothers, Anna carries the daily burden of trying to protect and provide for her child.

Right now, Speroway doesn’t have the funding to start a feeding program at Johnny’s school. But with your help, we can provide food baskets to families like Anna’s – so children like Johnny don’t have to learn on an empty stomach. Your support can give him the chance to grow, thrive, and dream – just like every child deserves.

Joyce’s Story

This time of year, we also recognize mother-like figures – like grandmothers – who step in to care for children when no one else will.

Joyce is a grandmother in Kisii, a rural part of Kenya where we support families in crisis. She’s raising her four grandsons – Lenny, Moses, Simon, and David – after their mother left and their father, struggling with alcoholism, could no longer care for them. Joyce’s only income comes from selling sugar cane, which barely covers the essentials, let alone enough food for four growing boys.

When we delivered a food basket to Joyce, she said, “I didn’t know how we were going to eat this week.” That basket was a lifeline – not just physically, but emotionally. It reminded her she wasn’t alone and gave her strength to keep going.

But Joyce can’t do it alone. She’s at a breaking point – without support, she may not be able to keep caring for her grandsons in the way they deserve. She worries about losing the ability to provide a safe home or the chance for them to go to school and escape poverty.

With your support, Joyce can continue giving her grandsons the nutrition, care, and security they need. Your generosity helps families like Joyce’s stay together and keep moving forward, one day at a time.

Anna and Joyce’s stories are just two examples of caregivers struggling to provide for their families. With your help, they can continue giving their children the nutritional support they need to survive and thrive.

Without your support, Anna and Joyce may not be able to give their children the care they need. Your gift will provide vital resources, ensuring their families have the nourishment and hope they need for a brighter future.

Please consider a generous gift today. Together, we can make sure no child goes to bed hungry and these mothers get the support they need to care for their families. Thank you for honouring these incredible women.
