How many children will you invite to your table this Harvest Season?

As Canadians across the country get ready to come together for Thanksgiving, many of us will pause to reflect on the blessings in our lives. Loved ones will reunite, tables will be arranged, and words of gratitude will be shared. However, as I am writing this letter I am reminded of so many children and families that are suffering and do not have this privilege of being able to reap from the Harvest and in fact struggle to put even one meal on the table.

Looking at the contrast in the picture above and realizing just how blessed we are to live in Canada it is that time of year that I am again challenging my family, and all Speroway partner families, to help feed as many hungry children as we possibly can. Asking the question… How many children or families will you invite to your table this Harvest Season?

In my travels this year I have been struck by how the global foodcrisis has impacted so many of our programs. For the first time in my ten years with Speroway, we are having to put a hold on committing to some of our feeding programs for this Fall.

Currently we don’t have the budget but we are trusting we will find away forward – as our name Speroway means “Hopeway” – we arehopeful we will be able to continue these vital programs.

Pictured here are a few of the thousands of children who need our support – children like Grace and Janis who live in a region that has had years of drought. It is difficult for their parents to provide daily food for them and they are depending on our community feeding programs for a nutritional meal.

Joel, who was wearing a donated Canada shirt when I met him, needs the cooking supplies provided to his mother so that his family can eat, and the children pictured below attend a school where they get fortified cereal at lunch.

Your generosity has helped transform and impact the lives of many children. I want you to know that we are very grateful for your donations, but we continue to need your support this Harvest Season to keep the feeding programs going.

Thank you for considering inviting some new guests to your table. I wish you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving.
