Hunger Doesn’t Take a Holiday

Summer should be a time to relax, but for many families around the world, it is when hunger hits hardest. When school ends, so do the meals many children rely on. In homes already stretched thin, parents struggle to fill the gap. Summer brings hunger, not holidays. While many in Canada enjoy long weekends or trips with family, families in the countries where Speroway works – Kenya, Nicaragua, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Malawi – face even greater hardship during this season. And, because summer is a slower season for giving, your support is urgently needed.

A Mother’s Struggle in Kenya

On a recent trip to rural Kenya, I visited many families, including Sarah’s. She is a mother of four children: Steve, Lynette, Angel, and Princess. Her husband is very ill and had to return to his home village to seek help. When I asked why her three older children were home from school, Sarah explained she couldn’t afford the fees and her youngest was sick.

Sarah’s only source of income is selling kale and vegetables along the main road, grown on her small plot of land. One day, while she was out selling, Princess woke up, crawled around searching for food, and unfortunately found some rat poison. Thankfully, she survived, but Sarah now faces medical bills and cannot cover school fees or provide regular meals.

When I visited, we were able to provide Sarah with a food bag. Speroway is actively working to find ways to help cover school fees, but what Sarah and families like hers need most is ongoing support with food at home. Food bags offer practical, essential help to families in crisis, reflecting God’s provision through your generous gifts. Please consider a generous gift to help families like Sarah’s.

Every donation is matched 3x by generous food suppliers, making your support go three times as far.

A Father’s Injury, A Family in Crisis

On my last visit to Nicaragua, I met Josh and his family.Josh lives with his young daughter Ashley and his elderly mother Angela in a home that’s falling apart and doesn’t even have four solid walls. He worked as a day labourer in a fishing community, but one day, while walking to work, he was hit by a car. The accident badly shattered his leg, leaving him unable to walk properly.

Without access to physiotherapy or disability benefits, Josh is in constant pain and can no longer work. This has made it very difficult to provide for his daughter and mother, and the family often goes hungry.

The roof leaks, they don’t have proper beds, and the family relies heavily on home delivery food packages or community feeding programs to get by. Ashley is not in school during the summer and cannot depend on school meals for nourishment.

Your gift today can help support vital community feeding program like these, providing meals when families need them most.

Hunger remains an ongoing challenge for many families. Your generosity provides steady support when it is needed most.
